Obituary

David A. Kolp, age 67, of Macomb, Michigan, passed away on September 29, 2026 in Brooksville, Florida. He was born on July 5, 1959 in Detroit to Calvin A. and Carol G. (Tolliver) Kolp and grew up in Fraser, Michigan. He graduated from Fraser High School. He went on to build a long career working for DuPont and Axalta, where he was known for his hard work, knowledge, and dedication.

Affectionately known as “Big Dave,” David had a personality that people naturally gravitated toward. He was often the life of the party, always ready to share a laugh, tell a story, or simply enjoy the company of those around him. He was cherished by his friends, and the many friendships he made throughout his life meant a great deal to him. In his younger years, he especially enjoyed traveling to Shoals, Indiana, to visit his grandfather and other relatives and spend time on the farm. Those visits helped foster his lifelong appreciation for farms, machinery, and especially tractors, which remained one of his great interests throughout his life. He also treasured the adventures he shared with his family. He enjoyed traveling to Germany to visit his brother, Calvin M. Kolp, along with memorable houseboating trips and time spent together.

Few places, however, held as many memories for David as Gaylanta Lake in Michigan. His parents built the family's cabin there during David's childhood and, over the years, developed it into their retirement home. For David, the lake remained a special connection to his parents, his childhood, and generations of family memories. He was happiest spending time outdoors—sitting around a campfire, building things, being in the woods, riding dirt bikes, chopping wood, and always finding another project to work on. After a day spent working with his hands or enjoying the outdoors, he could often be found relaxing by the fire, enjoying the company around him and, from time to time, a good cigar.

David especially enjoyed celebrating the Fourth of July at the lake, just one day before his birthday. He loved participating in the annual Fourth of July boat parade and getting together afterward to mingle, celebrate, and share a good time with his lake neighbors. It combined so many things that were important to him: family, friends, the lake, and a reason to celebrate.

David was also the kind of person who knew how to fix just about anything. A skilled handyman with a natural mechanical ability, he could often be found working on cars and engines or tackling household repairs and maintenance. If something was broken or there was a project to be completed, chances were Big Dave could figure out how to get it done.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Casey Kolp of Lake Worth, Florida; his nephew, David (Angela) Kolp of Grosse Pointe Woods; Kristen (Ryan) Kolp-Cueny of Almont; nephew Jerry (Monica) Pardo of Lake Worth, Florida; and his beloved great-nieces and great-nephew, Angelina, Thomas, Ruby and Callie. He is also remembered by his extended family, many childhood friends and lake neighbors who knew, loved, and cherished him. David was preceded in death by his father, Calvin A. Kolp; his mother, Carol G. Kolp; his brother, Calvin M. Kolp; and niece, Deanna Pardo.

There will always be reminders of Big Dave—in the sound of an engine coming to life, a tractor working a field, wood being chopped for a campfire, an evening spent by the lake, or boats gathering on the water every Fourth of July.

And when family and friends gather together, share old stories, laugh a little louder, and remember the good times, Big Dave will never be very far away.
