Jan Huston (85), of Lewiston, passed away peacefully at home on August 29th, 2023, following a battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family and dear friends. Born Janet Christine Chaney on November 24, 1937, to Homer and Martina Chaney, she was raised primarily in the Torch Lake area.
Jan was a graduate of Elk Rapids High School and received a Bachelor of Science from Michigan State University in 1959. She married Marquis (Mark) Huston that same year. Jan taught Home Economics in Southfield, Michigan for five years before moving to Lewiston in 1968. In 1969, Jan founded the Lewiston's Co-operative Nursery School which ran for 40 years. She also continued to substitute teach in local schools for many years and was an extremely active community volunteer for many local organizations including 4-H, Lewiston Lioness, the Lewiston Area Historical Society, the United Church of Christ and the Lewiston Chamber of Commerce. Jan was a devoted wife and mother of three, loved to paint, cross country ski, walk, entertain and was a devoted friend. She was known for her wonderful "funny bone" and warm, welcoming nature. No one threw a party like Jan Huston!
Jan's legacy lives on through her three children and their spouses: Mark Huston of Boyne City, Michigan, Heather (Kim) Wagner of Mill Valley, California, Shawn (Wendy) Huston of Lewiston. Additionally, she is cherished by her four grandchildren, Connor, Avery, Parker, and Larson.
Jan's loving husband, Mark Huston preceded her in death, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories.
