Susie Ford Mathewson left this world far too soon on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. Growing up in Red Oak, Michigan and spending her summer on the shores of East Twin Lake, she had such a love for Lewiston, Michigan.

Susie and her husband, Scott, spent 34 years taking on the world together. Together, they not only raised two compassionate, successful and kind children, but built beautiful trails and gardens together. Walking through the woods, Susie found and cultivated pieces of Heaven on Earth.

During the 2026 Garden Walk, so many members of the Lewiston community got to share her joy in wandering the peaceful mossy trails surrounded by natural stick fences and admiring the many flowers that continue to reach for the light, even without her here. Susie’s gardens are the most visible celebration of the dedication and hard work she put into everything she did.

While her love of flower gardening, including caretaking many flower beds around Lewiston was so evident, she loved her children, McKenzie and McGwire and many dogs, more. A faithful mother, she happily talked to both children daily, sharing many laughs, stories of their adventures, and guidance, as needed. As heartbroken as McKenzie and McGwire are to lose their best friend, they take solace in knowing their mother’s love for them is eternal and she is not suffering in a life where she couldn’t be the vibrant woman who shaped who they are today.

Her kindness, creativity, beautiful handwriting, and desire “to do a little good” will live on in all those who knew her.

Susie is survived by her devoted husband, Scott Mathewson; children, McKenzie and McGwire Mathewson; beloved brother, Jerry (Deb) Ford; nephew, Joe Ford; and three dogs, Buddy, Sunny, and Friday. In death she joins her parents, Barb and Don Ford.

Her final wishes were to be surrounded by dogs, to which a caring hospital staff honored that wish with four different dogs by her side in the final hours. As you think of Susie and keep her memory alive, please, “do a little good” for the world.

In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place. The family has chosen to remember Susie privately at this time. Arrangements were entrusted to Green Funeral Homes.
