Sue Ellen Hughes

Mrs. Sue Ellen Hughes, 74 of Lewiston, Michigan lost her courageous two-year battle with cancer on June 30, 2024 while at home. She was born in Grayling, Michigan on January 28, 1950 to Guy and Carmella (Gardner) Shiel. At the age of 22, she married her husband, Gerald Hughes, on May 13, 1972 and together the couple celebrated 52 years of loving memories before her passing. Sue created a home for her husband and children and did the bookkeeping for the family business. Once their children were grown, Sue began working at the local Rite Aid. She was an avid reader and enjoyed tending to her flower gardens. Sue excelled at playing Scrabble and made fantastic fudge and fruit cakes for family and friends. Sue’s artistic talents included ceramics, sewing, quilting, and photography. She loved spending time with family at their cabin in the Upper Peninsula and out fishing them all with her pink lure on Driggs Lake. Sue is and will be deeply missed.

 She is survived by her loving husband, Gerald Hughes of Lewiston; children, Lisa Hughes (Nick) of Glade Park, Colorado; Matthew (Stephanie) Hughes of Irmo, South Carolina; Daniel Hughes of Atlanta; grandchildren, Morgan, Carson, Delaney, Dylan, Mattie, and Olivia; great-grandchild, Layton; brother, Donnie (AnSun) Shiel of Waveland, Mississippi; sister, Kay Shiel of St. Helen; and numerous nieces and nephews. Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Carmella Shiel; infant twins, Christine and Danielle; brother, Gary; and sister, Ann.

 In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service held in celebration of Sue’s life at 1:00 PM on Friday, July 12, 2024 at Green Funeral Home, Lewiston; Pastor Dave Engel officiating. Visitation will take place from noon until time of service. An inurnment ceremony for the family will take place directly after the memorial. Friends and family are welcome to gather at the Vienna Township Hall at 2:00 PM for refreshments.
