Robert Newton

January 17, 1937 — May 25, 2020

Lewiston

Lifelong Lewiston resident, Robert Sherman Newton, devoted husband and loving father, passed away on May 25, 2020. Bob was born on January 17, 1937 in Atlanta, Michigan to Beatrice and George Newton. After attending Barber College, he opened Bob's Corner Barbershop on Kneeland Street in downtown Lewiston in 1966. Over the years the business grew to include an ice cream parlor, beauty shop, pool hall, bakery, and a pizza parlor. Bob loved kids, and along with his wife Gretchen, he supported children by working with the Boy Scouts, holding ice skating and sledding parties, and attending school sports and music events. They employed many young adults, including their own children, during busy summers. He married Gretchen on November 3, 1973. Bob and Gretchen loved their lakefront home and walks in the woods. They worked hard and played hard and shared their joys with many Lewiston area folks. Their family wishes to thank all of you for supporting Bob and Gretchen over the years. Please remember them when you have an ice cream cone.

Bob is survived by his children, Bob (Katie) Newton; Phoenix (Debby) Sodt; James (Kathy) Sodt; Carol (Joe) Joyce; Janis (Paul Allen) Sodt; sisters, Eileen Duff and Mary Law; niece, Della Licht; and many other extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Beatrice and George Newton; wife, Gretchen in 2018; and son, John in 2000.

There will be no memorial service during these times. Any contributions can be made to the Congregational United Church of Christ in Lewiston or to Hospice of Michigan, Gaylord.
